Enamels and linocuts always stand out for their purity, simplicity and detachment from the confines of the norm and represent forms of art in a very fundamental manner. Such an exhibition of linocuts by Peter Daglish and enamels by Amal Ghosh is showcased at the Ganges Art Gallery on January 14. The exhibition was inaugurated by Ashok Bhattacharya, minister, municipal affairs and urban development, government of West Bengal.

"This is a very unusual art show where the artists showcased humour, lost time, youthful beauty and eternal desire. Ghosh and Daglish stimulate both visual and intellectual appetites,” said Bhattacharya.

Enamelling, the technique of fusing coloured glass powder on to a metal surface under high heat, has long been associated with jewellery and ecclesiastical objects. "The real importance for me of large scale vitreous enamel is its validity as an art form in an architectural or environmental context. In many ways it is the ideal medium as it combines a freedom of colour, expression and technique with the practical advantages of a fireproof and corrosion proof material which can be applied to almost any internal or external surface,” said Amal Ghosh.

Linocuts are relief print produced in a manner similar to woodcuts. Daglish makes incredible use of the medium's strong graphical potential to exploit the bold patterns, which are integral to his work. His works describes the different situations he faced in his life during his traveling adventures, portraying the different characters of urban life he has met. "Le Vicomtesse – A French Nobel Women, Cousin Mary – An Opera Singer, A Waitress Serving at a New York Bar – these are some of my favourites which have been exhibited here. There are different ideas about each of the linocut prints, which are showcased,” said Peter Daglish.

The exhibition will be open till January 31 from 11 am to 7 pm.
