In the cosy atmosphere of Oxford bookstore, the cast and crew of Suman Mukhopadhyay’s Bengali film Chaturanga, joined in a discussion session on November 19.

A video collage of the film clippings set the tone of the evening. About his love for literary sources for his movies Mukhopadhyay said, “There are some novels, when you read them, they stir you and you feel the instant urge to rewrite them. Same thing happened to me when I read Tagore’s Chaturanga.” The session proceeded with reading a few portions of the novel by Kabir Suman, who has played the role of Lilananda Swami in the movie. Actor Subrata Dutta of Herbert fame, and Patalghar’s Joy Sengupta also joined in the script reading session.

The conflict between idealism and materialism, the tension between love and worship could be felt when Rituparna Sengupta uttered a few lines from her script with the two male characters.

Commenting on the art of adaptation the director said, “In this movie I have quoted from Madhusudan Dutta and also from another play of Tagore. This is the novelty of adaptation.”

Sharing a funny moment of the shooting Rituparna recollected how she missed a night shot as she arrived late in the spot. While a Sufi song from the movie transported the audience to another world, Kabir Suman’s comment on the film was a real illumination. “Like Tagore, our director has also kept it a secret that whom does Damini actually love. It is left for the reader’s interpretation,” added Kabir.

The session was concluded with an open quiz, the winners of which were given the free ticket of the premiere show of the film on November 20.
